Typhoid fever is caused by bacteria spread through food and water contaminated with sewage. It is a risk across South Asia, parts of Africa, South America and South East Asia.

The injected vaccine is given as a single dose and protects for around three years. It is most often recommended for travellers visiting friends and relatives, staying with local families, or travelling outside the main tourist areas.
