Malarone contains atovaquone and proguanil and is one of the most widely used antimalarials for UK travellers. It is taken once a day, starting one to two days before you arrive, throughout your stay and for seven days after you leave the risk area.
It is generally well tolerated and the short post-travel course makes it convenient for shorter trips. Common side effects include stomach upset, headache and mouth ulcers. Take it with food or a milky drink to help absorption, and continue using insect repellent and mosquito nets, since no antimalarial is completely protective.
