Japanese encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes in rural and agricultural areas across South and South East Asia, particularly where there is rice farming and pig rearing.

The risk to short-stay city travellers is very low, so this vaccine is usually recommended for longer trips, rural stays or repeated travel. It is given as two doses 28 days apart.
