Most insect bites are itchy and swollen but not infected. An infected bite is different: the redness spreads, the area becomes warm and painful, and pus or a fever may develop.
Our pharmacist will look at the bite and assess whether it is genuinely infected or simply an ordinary reaction. Where infection is present and you are eligible, antibiotics can be supplied straight away under NHS Pharmacy First.
Where it is a normal reaction, we will advise on antihistamines and how to relieve the itching. Marking the edge of the redness with a pen is a simple way to see whether it is spreading.
