Ferritin reflects how much iron your body has in reserve, and it falls before iron in the blood does. That makes it the earlier warning of a developing deficiency.
Low iron causes tiredness, breathlessness, poor concentration, brittle nails and hair loss. It is common in women with heavy periods, people following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and regular endurance athletes.
We will explain your result and advise on supplements or dietary changes. Where iron is very low, or low without an obvious reason, we will refer you to your GP for further investigation.
