Infected eczema occurs when bacteria, viruses, or fungi enter skin that has been damaged by eczema. The skin may become more red, swollen, painful, and itchy than usual, and it can produce fluid, crusts, or pus.
Some people may also develop fever or feel unwell. Scratching the skin can increase the risk of infection.
Infected eczema is common in children and adults with severe or poorly controlled eczema. Treatment may include antibiotic, antiviral, or antifungal medicines, along with regular moisturizers and medicated creams. Early treatment is important to prevent the infection from spreading or becoming more severe.
