Travellers’ Diarrhoea

Travelling abroad? Book a face-to-face consultation with one of our qualified Prescribing Pharmacists for expert advice on preventing and managing traveller's diarrhoea. During your consultation, we'll discuss your destination, travel itinerary, medical history and individual risk factors before recommending the most appropriate treatment or standby medication where clinically appropriate. We'll also provide practical advice on food and water safety, hydration and recognising when medical attention is needed while travelling. Where appropriate, your medication can be supplied during your visit so you're fully prepared before departure.

Travellers’ Diarrhoea

Traveller’s diarrhoea is a common illness that affects people when traveling, especially to areas with poor food or water hygiene. It is usually caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites found in contaminated food or drinks.

Symptoms may include loose stools, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration. Most cases are mild and improve within a few days with rest and good hydration.

In moderate or severe cases, azithromycin is a commonly recommended antibiotic that can help shorten the duration of symptoms and speed recovery, particularly when fever or severe diarrhoea is present. Drinking plenty of fluids, practicing good hand hygiene, and avoiding unsafe food and water can also help reduce the risk of infection.
