Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus reactivating, usually years after the original infection. It causes a painful rash on one side of the body, often preceded by burning or tingling in the same area.
Antiviral treatment works best within 72 hours of the rash appearing, so come in as soon as you can. Our pharmacist will confirm the diagnosis and, where you are eligible, supply antivirals straight away under NHS Pharmacy First.
We will also advise on pain relief, since the discomfort can be significant and may continue after the rash clears. Where the rash affects the eye or you are immunosuppressed, we will refer you urgently rather than treating here.
