TDAP covers tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, better known as whooping cough. It is the pertussis component that makes it different from the standard tetanus and polio booster.

It is commonly requested by people in close contact with newborn babies, since whooping cough is most dangerous in the first few months of life, and by anyone whose childhood protection has faded.
