Rabies is spread through bites, scratches and licks from infected animals, most often dogs. It is present across much of Asia, Africa and parts of South and Central America.
Pre-exposure vaccination is a course of three doses. It does not remove the need for urgent medical treatment after a bite, but it simplifies that treatment considerably and buys valuable time, which matters if you are far from a hospital.
